Back Pain Relief Starts with Your Breath, Not a Massage

Why Your Regular Massage Might Be Making Your Chronic Back Pain Worse

As a former massage therapist turned movement specialist, I’m here to tell you something you might not expect:

Your regularly scheduled deep tissue massage could be contributing to your chronic back pain not getting better.

I know: It feels good... mostly.

It gives you temporary relief.

You’ve been told “no pain, no gain.”

And it’s hard to believe that something that helps in the short term could actually hurt in the long term.

But here’s the truth:

The muscle tension your massage therapist is working to “release” isn’t just random tightness. It’s your body’s way of protecting you.

That tight, braced, restricted feeling? It’s not a mistake. It’s your nervous system telling your muscles and skeleton trying to keep you safe.

When your brain senses instability, especially around your spine and core, it creates tension as a backup plan.

Unless you address the real issue, the lack of support underneath that tension, massage alone won’t create lasting change. In fact, it can lead to more pain, tighter muscles, and deeper frustration.

Massage Isn't the Only Problem. Lack of Support is Impeding Your Back Pain Relief.

This isn’t about blaming your massage therapist. I used to give the same treatments.

I received them too.

But the relief never lasted. The pain always came back.

Then I learned something different.

I learned how to help the body feel safe and supported from the inside out, starting with my breathing.

The Missing Link? Breathing That Supports Your Spine

Your breathing mechanics are the foundation of true core stability.

When you learn how to breathe in a way that activates deep core muscles, like the diaphragm, pelvic floor, and transverse abdominis, you create internal support for your spine.

That support tells your brain:

“Hey, we’ve got this. We’re stable. No need to clamp down.”

As a result, muscle tension fades because it’s no longer needed. You’re not fighting your own body anymore. You’re partnering with it.

Through my coaching method, I teach clients how to:

  • Rebuild breathing patterns to create deep core engagement

  • Retrain movement patterns that reduce tension and guarding

  • Restore stability and freedom in your spine, hips, and shoulders

  • Reduce chronic pain without stretching, foam rolling, or “just relaxing” the area

Back Pain Relief That Lasts Because It’s Built from the Inside

It’s not about forcing tight muscles to relax.

It’s about giving your body a reason to let go because it finally feels safe to move again.

Are you ready to learn better, do better, and finally get better?

Start here to chat with me and learn how breathing better is the step you've been missing.

PS I'll actually teach you how to use it so you can still get your regular massage...just not the deep tissue kind. You won't need it - you can actually relax in your sessions from now on!
